The story so far: Somebody is killing/draining a sun to gain energy for their nefarious purposes. They pierce the sun with a spear – a beam transferring the energy from the sun. Haven’t we seen this movie before? Indeed, we have, as I am trying to suggest in the following images. Feel free to create your own combining the Starkiller Base with the theme of Lightbringer.
A silly observation: Hux is similar to "lux" and lux is light. Lightbringer, indeed.
The image above has some strange similarities to how Asshai is depicted in The World of Ice and Fire. I don't want to include that image because I respect the copyright, but if you have the copy of TWoIaF, check it out towards the end of the book. Some buildings look eerily similar. To clarify: I know that in Star Wars it is the image from a planet being destroyed by the Lightbringer, not where the beam originates. I would have used the beam originating from Asshai, but we don't have it (yet...).
Why Lightbringer? Well, think about it. Lightbringer is something that brings light. Light of what? A reasonable answer: the most abundant and powerful light there is – the light of the Sun. Then, remember about Heart of Light and “fire is power” theme.
The image above shows that the visual or mythological difference between a sword and a spear is not that significance. Remember, Lightbringer is called the Red Sword of Heroes.
The Lightbringer brings the light to whom? To whom who needs it most, to those who lust for power of fire they saw in Daenerys and her dragons – the warlocks. (Here and later, the warlocks is a short for “extreme magic users of Essos including, but not limited to Asshai”.)
Do we see other evidences to connect “sun transfixed by a spear” with Lightbringer? Yes, we do – at least tentatively, to suggest that the story could go in that direction if you-know-who so desires. Remember our discussion of what the spear actually pierces and the most likely answer: the Heart of Fire, the heart of the sun, or the living energy of the Lord of Light. So, we have a weapon piercing the Sun, the Heart of Fire. See the legend of Lightbringer and specifically sacrifice of Nissa Nissa. I am pretty sure you can find “astronomical” theories regarding NN. On a very simple level, remember her cry of anguish that left a crack across the face of the moon. If she’s not the moon, but some astronomical significance is here, then what is she? The Sun, most likely. Also consider the story Dany hears about the second moon being cracked by the Sun. A cracking of a moon is present in both stories; the Sun is present explicitly in one of them, thus suggesting that it might be implicitly present in NN story as well.
> but warm as Nissa Nissa had been warm.
Lightbringer as a mechanism of light/power deliver from Sun to Earth? Sort of the following image from Star Wars, The Force Awakens?
Can we criticize it? Of course, we can. We started with “spear piercing the Heart of Fire”, but Lightbringer is supposed to be a sword. Is that significant? I don’t know. One of the inspirations for the religious imagery we see here might be the Sacred Heart. In this specifically-Catholic tradition we see a heart pierced. The images I found show in roughly equal measure swords or spears. Sometimes it is pierced by a sword or swords. Sometime by a spear. Typical romantic allegory is a heart pierced by an arrow and NN story does involve love. So, who knows. I would say that a weapon is a weapon: it is more significant what it pierces and who does the piercing.
If you remember, we started this page with The Force Awakens. In that movie, there are two red weapons. One is astronomical, planetary-level red spear piercing the skies.
The other one is a red lightsaber, light sword. Lightbringer is a red sword of heroes with light in its name. And we also saw its astronomical/mythical interpretation as an energy beam killing the sun or piercing the heart of a god. Why these strange coincidences? Red sword of heroes and Kylo Ren’s red lightsaber. Its inverse cross and bloodstone being blood touching the green earth after a spear pierces the body on the cross. Spear piercing the sun and the beam of energy coming from a sun in Star Wars. Feel free to explore “innocent” explanations like GRRM secretly writing Star Wars scripts. That is one theory why the books take long(er). My explanation is the shared nature of archetypical images that are found independently. Somehow on our secret common wish list we had “a red sword” and both writers bring us what we desire.
The topic really deserves a more in-depth and serious discussion.
